How to know when it is time for joint replacement surgery

Just about everyone knows someone who has had joint replacement surgery. With more than one million of these procedures performed each year, they have become one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States. But even more interesting is the recent study by Mayo Clinic that revealed that 7.2 million Americans are living successfully with these joint replacements. The procedures have allowed millions to be able to have a better quality of life by easing the pain and allowing for better movement.

The decision when to have this life-changing surgery is an important one. Here are a few points to consider when deciding if surgery is right for you.

Other options exhausted
When joint pain first starts, there are some non-surgical options. Some doctors encourage weight loss to reduce the pressure exerted on joints. Another option is working with a physical therapist who can strengthen the muscles around the joint which helps it move more effectively. Doctors also may try using injections into the joint to reduce the pain or prescribe topical creams that can soothe and control pain. These and other non-surgical options do work for some people for a period of time but when they are no longer effective, it may be time to look seriously at joint replacement surgery.

Deformity
Some people experience swelling, which causes the joint to be deformed. This most often happens with the knee and can cause the leg to bow out making it difficult to walk safely. When one part of the body is not functioning correctly, it can impact other parts of the body causing new problems.

Bone damage
When X-rays of the affected joint reveal that the osteoarthritis or another condition is damaging the bone in the joint, it is a sign that action should be taken. Over time, the bones may become so unstable that safe movement is less possible.

Pain
When the pain and feeling of stiffness has lasted six months or longer and is so invasive that it makes it difficult to climb stairs, walk or get up from a chair, it is time to consider joint replacement surgery. When the pain limits your ability to be active, new issues can emerge brought on by the lack of regular exercise.

Quality of life
Aches and pains are considered a part of aging but when the pain is so severe that you stop participating in life, it is time to consider surgery. When you can’t bear to do everyday things like take a walk, climb stairs, step in the shower or prepare a meal, your quality of life is being affected. Joint replacement surgery is often the answer to being able to return to an active lifestyle.

Making the commitment
Joint replacement surgery requires a team approach with you, the doctor and the physical therapist working together. There may be a need for some lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, losing some weight and adding exercise to your daily routine. It is also important to be ready for a period of recovery. After the procedure, it is important to have someone to help with a variety of tasks from wound care to meal preparation. There needs to be careful planning to assure the greatest success.

A good choice
Some things are best left to the professionals and recovery after joint replacement surgery is one of those things.
